Deva Cut: a detailed overview

Deva Cut: a detailed overview
History of the method Deva Cut
The Deva Cut is a cutting method specifically designed for curly hair. It was created by Lorraine Massey, stylist and owner of Devachan Salon, who herself has struggled with unruly curls all her life. Her book Curly Girl: The Handbook, published in 2002, has become a manifesto for curly girls, suggesting that they abandon sulfate shampoos and start caring for their curls in a new way.
Deva Cut originated from the philosophy of embracing the natural texture of hair and rejecting forced straightening. Instead, the method focuses on individualizing each curl, taking into account its unique shape and growth direction.
Advantages Deva Cut over other methods
- Dry Hair Cut: The Deva Cut is performed on dry hair, allowing the stylist to see the natural shape and behavior of each curl. This eliminates the “surprise” effect after drying, which often occurs when cutting wet curly hair.
- Curl by curl cutting: Each curl is cut individually, taking into account its shape and direction of growth. This creates a natural and harmonious hairstyle, avoiding the “triangle” effect or unnatural bouffant.
- Curl type: Deva Cut takes into account the different types of curls (wavy, curly, spiral) and selects a cutting technique that emphasizes their beauty.
- Preserving length: Deva Cut allows you to preserve the maximum length of your hair, removing only split ends and shaping the desired shape.
- Minimizing frizz: A curl by curl haircut helps minimize frizz, creating more defined and bouncy curls.
Preparing for the cut
- No Straightening: Before the Deva Cut, it is necessary to stop straightening the hair for at least 2-4 weeks to allow the curls to take their natural shape.
- Using the right products: To prepare for the cut, it is recommended to use moisturizing products for curly hair, without sulfates and silicones, to avoid unnecessary frizz.
- Washing hair before cutting: It is recommended to wash hair before cutting Deva Cut using a suitable conditioner or co-washing (washing hair with conditioner).
The above tips are general recommendations for caring for curly hair and may be useful to achieve the best results from the cut.
