How does the porosity of curly hair affect moisture absorption?

Hair porosity affects moisture absorption by determining how well water, oils and moisturizers penetrate through the cuticle, or outer layer of the hair.

Porosity falls into three categories: low, medium and high. Here’s how each type of porosity affects moisture absorption:

  1. Low porous curly hair:
    • Tightly closed cuticles.
    • Water and products have a hard time penetrating the hair shaft
    • Hair feels dry and is prone to tangling
    • Requires intense conditioning and heat to open the cuticles for better absorption.
  2. Medium porosity curly hair:
    • Cuticles are slightly ajar.
    • Absorbs moisture and products more easily than low porosity hair.
    • Hair is generally healthy and balanced
    • Require regular conditioning and moisturizing
  3. Highly porous curly hair:
    • Cuticles are very open
    • Water and products are easily absorbed, but can also leak out quickly.
    • Hair is prone to frizz and breakage
    • Requires frequent moisturizing and sealing to retain moisture
